BOX 23 - Ayo
Here, silence speaks.
The wind whispers.
Rock drawings remain silent.

SIDE
In my studio, I chose not to work at the torch, but on flat glass. No molten line in the air, but layers moving across one another.
I wanted time to become visible. For what comes one after another not to disappear, but to accumulate.
Two glass plates form a single drawing. What begins on the first layer is continued or added to on the second.
Two glass plates are physically present. In the act of looking, a third layer emerges — visible, but impossible to grasp.
SITE
Ayo is impressive. An immense formation of stacked tonalite boulders in the landscape. The sun shines and warms the stones. The wind moves audibly around the rock formation.
During my first SITEwalk here, we first go to the drawings. They are located on a single boulder, outside the main formation. A metal-bar fence protects them. The drawings are red and white. Some have been applied over others. This is something you do not see at any other site.
Who painted them, and why on top of one another?
Different groups? Different times?
Was what came later an addition, or an overwriting?
Could white perhaps have a different meaning from red — white belonging to the spiritual world, red to perceptible reality?
Ayo calls for more than one visit. Without hurry.
SIGHT
Ayo is about becoming still. Being aware of what came before us, without thinking that we can understand everything.
What we see changes with our perspective. Layers overlap, become visible, and disappear again.
Perhaps not everything needs to have a single meaning. Perhaps different realities can exist alongside and through one another.
